H2eart for Europe – an alliance to accelerate the development of underground hydrogen storage projects for a CO2-free future

RAG Energy Storage GmbH is a member of the new “H2eart for Europe” alliance to accelerate hydrogen storage projects. As part of the hydrogen economy of tomorrow, we want to actively shape and enable the hydrogen ramp-up in Central Europe. With flagship projects like Underground Sun Storage 2030 and EUH2STARS, we can create the potential for large-volume and seasonal hydrogen storage and accelerate the transition to a CO2-free future. Only with these hydrogen storage demonstration projects it will be possible to scale up and contribute to a year-round energy supply.

H2eart for Europe was launched in January 2024 by a group of leading storage service operators. H2eart for Europe works with a shared vision to develop and build the storage infrastructure needed to achieve Europe's climate targets by 2030 and beyond.

We recognize the central role of hydrogen and the associated storage infrastructure for a CO2-free Europe and are confident that we are able to drive the scale-up of projects and attract investment that is critical to the growth of this important sector.

Marketing of capacities of the Haidach natural gas storage facility

Marketing of capacities of the Haidach natural gas storage facility

RAG Austria AG as the technical operator of the Haidach storage facility has received a marketing order from the regulatory authority E-Control for part of the storage capacities in the Haidach storage facility - amounting to about 14 TWh working gas volume.
This marketing task will be carried out by RAG Energy Storage GmbH (100% subsidiary of RAG Austria AG). We are already taking all the necessary steps to ensure that marketing of these capacities can begin without delay.

The binding inquiries are currently being processed step by step in accordance with the legal requirements on a first come, first serve basis. We expect our customers to start storing capacity as early as the beginning of August 2022. The energy storage facilities operated by RAG Austria AG are among the most modern in Europe, thanks to decades of experience and the highest environmental and safety standards in planning, construction and operation.

Especially in the current energy policy situation, it is particularly important that the storage facilities are optimally maintained and in operation at all times - around the clock - in order to store the energy supplied and to make it available at full capacity when it is needed.

Europe’s energy supply sector is facing an exciting future.

Europe’s energy supply sector is facing an exciting future.

Natural gas and gas infrastructure will play a central role in this new era. Gas storage facilities will have a particularly important part to play, owing to the demand for flexibility created by new energy sources and increased reliance on energy trading. In response to these needs, on 1 January 2013 Rohöl-Aufsuchungs Aktiengesellschaft (RAG) formed a modern, customer friendly subsidiary, RAG Energy Storage, to market its storage capacity.
